Fucking spammers

Ugh…

Just got 35 comments in from some asshat peddling a titty site. It’s been going on for roughly 2 months with differing people and different sites. It’s been going on to other web sites (David, Richard, Neil and Jay to name a few) and guest books as well. When they hit, I usually immediately delete the comment and block the block of IP addresses from coming in. Yeah I know it sucks blocking a whole subnet, but it’s an easy fix.

This time, it’s gone a wee bit too far.

I’ve removed the comments on the sidebar and am following some of the excellent advice that Neil offers on curbing these attacks.

Here’s an interesting question. If I actually delete the entries within MySQL and rebuild, will it take care of it in one shot with a rebuild after all of the offending data rows are deleted? It sucks going to each damn entry just to delete and then rebuild.

Grrrrrr…

UPDATE: Added the comments sidebar again and am now running a few things to make it easier to delete comments spam if it shows it’s face in here.

Just blogged a bit on it, and check the trackback on my post Dear Mr. Preteen — Teresa Neilsen Hayden is collating IP#s for folks, plus there’s a lot of folks talking about fixes.

Stop comment spam…
Jay Allen, who must be brilliant, just released MT-Blacklist, an add-in to MovableType that will, according to the site, “eradicate comment and TrackBack spam.” It is in beta, so consider yourselves forewarned. Ben at SixApart is contemplating solution…
