Future endings and beginnings

The CEO just had everyone in the company meet in our warehouse for a special announcement.

In the past month or so, there’s been speculation that the company was going to move because we’re just too damn crowded here. Some folks were spreading a rumor that is was all going to happen this November, but I just couldn’t see the company doing that to the folks working here. We’re treated much too well to be forced to look for another job in such a short amount of time.

The meeting we just got out of confirmed all of the rumors. However, the main headquarters where I am located in North Jersey will be moved to Albany, NY and it will not happen until the end of May next year. They are also giving everyone a very generous severance package at the end of May which is unheard of nowadays. The company will also continue everyone’s medical coverage for a short while and offer the services of employment agencies to get everyone new jobs a few months before the final date.

Understandably people were very sad and most started sobbing. This is really the best place I have worked for this far in my life because it’s like a family here. Most around me are scared, but it’s a hell of a lot better than how I left my last job. I was the second person layed off that day with only one week’s pay and no health insurance beginning that instant. In the span of 5 minutes, I was given a crappy “Sorry” speech, handed a small check and escorted out of the building. I didn’t sob that day, but I must admit a shed a single tear seeing the Alpha Technologies building in my rearview mirror while driving back home. I was scared, didn’t have much money saved up and out of a job in an instant. Several months later, I called this place home.

Today, I am only sad that I will have to leave this family next year and be forced to join another one. However, given the fact that I have a long time to look for a new job, I am grateful it didn’t turn out like my last job. This company is doing the layoff thing right and for that I am eternally grateful.

  1. I’m so sorry to hear this Dave!!! I know you really like this job…but you’re right, they’re doing it the right way and you have plenty of time to find another one. Don’t get too discouraged hon, it will all come out in the end.

  2. Sorry to hear the sad news Dave. I’ve been through two layoffs. I loved both jobs. Sucked though that they were one after the other and the second one was while I was still in training. Business world. nuff said. Good luck!

  3. I went through the same thing in June. Five minute notice sucks. You will be okay since you have the skills…

  4. Oh Dave! 🙁 I am so sorry to hear this! Well, Lindsey’s right – at least they’re giving you enough time to find a new job. It’s hard to leave a place you’re so familiar with, but keep trying to look at the bright side and new opportunities.
